+Requirements
This bikepacking tour with the gravel bike is aimed at physically strong riders. The terrain is demanding, and the stage lengths are adjusted accordingly. Riding 50 km on gravel roads is
certainly more strenuous than 100 km on flat asphalt. A rest day is not planned, so you must be aware that you need to be able to complete the entire distance physically. Our pace will be
moderate, no one will ride alone, and we will keep the group together at all times! Each participant will receive the GPX routes in advance, and we will meet online for a route briefing
beforehand.
+Arrival
The starting point, Hostel Café Koti, is located in the center of Rovaniemi (Valtakatu 21, Rovaniemi).
By Air:
First, you need to fly to Helsinki. There are several daily flights from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. Rovaniemi Airport is 10 km from the city center. Some European cities also have direct flights to
Oulu, from where you can take a train or bus to Rovaniemi (3-4 hours). We generally recommend traveling by air, as it is quick and straightforward. You can find connections from Germany to
Rovaniemi with a layover in Helsinki on Google Flights or similar platforms.
By Train:
There are 1-2 direct night trains from Helsinki to Rovaniemi daily (via Oulu). The night trains have both sleeper cabins and regular seats. Another option is the early morning train from Helsinki
to Rovaniemi, which takes about 8-9 hours. A seat for a bike must be reserved in advance.
IMPORTANT:
You will book your flight or train independently; we do not handle flight bookings!
When booking your flight to Rovaniemi, add the bike transport. We recommend organizing a bike bag for the journey, which can then be left with our local partner.
+Departure
As a standard, we will bring you and your bike back to Rovaniemi the day after the tour ends (September 4). We will arrive in Rovaniemi around 5:00 PM. We can also drop you off at Kittilä Airport (KTT), with an arrival time around 3:00 PM. To do this, you must leave Alta around 8:00 AM.
Alternatively, you can also return home from Norway. Here are the options:
Direct flight from Alta: Few connections and they tend to be quite expensive.
Take the bus from Alta to Tromsø (7 hours): From there, you can continue your journey. It's a scenic bus ride, so not a bad option. However, a bike seat cannot be reserved in advance, and it will only be allowed if space is available. If you have time, you can get off the bus in Lyngseidet (right after the Olderdalen - Lyngseidet ferry) and cycle the last 77 km over the Lyngen Alps to Tromsø. There is a ferry on the way (Svensby-Breidvik), so some planning is needed. The first 52 km have little traffic, and the last 25 km are on the main road.
Hurtigruten ferry to Tromsø:
First, you can take the bus (2.5 hours) or ferry (2.5 hours) from Alta to Hammerfest, and then board the Hurtigruten ferry (10 hours). Alternatively, you can cycle 120 km to Øksfjord (80
km on the main road with occasional side roads to avoid traffic, then 50 km with less traffic to Øksfjord) and take the ferry to Tromsø (7 hours 40 minutes). The ferry doesn’t operate
every day, so some advanced planning is required.
No matter which return route you choose, we are happy to assist you with the planning. However, please note that options 2 and 3 involve additional costs, which are not included in the tour price.

For this bikepacking trip, we are collaborating with the Finnish specialists from Ylläs Experiences. Click on the logo to check out their offerings.
The tour begins in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, where you should preferably arrive by 4:00 PM on August 26th. We will pick up participants from the airport or train station. During the
day, we will stock up on snacks for the first 1.5 days of the trip, prepare the bikes, and later in the evening, we’ll meet for a welcome dinner where we will also go over the schedule and
double-check the equipment list.
Accommodation: Hostel Café Koti
Dinner: A cozy restaurant in Rovaniemi (e.g., Yuca)
Important Notes:
The route starts on the bike path from Rovaniemi Station, following bike paths outside the city of Rovaniemi along the Kemi River, before we dive into the dense Arctic boreal forest on
gravel.
Route Highlights:
The first opportunity to shop along the route is the M-Market in Lankajärvi, after a stretch of asphalt. In the village of Pello, 50 km from Miekojärvi, there are several services, as well as
a gas station restaurant and a grocery store. Here, we’ll stock up on snacks for the rest of the day and the next day. From Pello, the route follows cobblestones along the Finnish-Swedish
border river Tornio (the largest salmon river in the world by water volume) to the Jouttensuvannon loma resort, where we will spend the night.
Meals:
The third day starts with a few quick kilometers on the asphalt along the border river before we turn back onto old lumberjack roads into the taiga. Before reaching the Kämppäsajo day trip
cabin, there is a nice small spring behind a public cabin where you can fill your water bottles with fresh spring water. Before reaching the village of Kolari, there is an ICA Lahtis
supermarket on the Swedish side of the river, a small detour, but if we want to take a quick side trip to Sweden, it's definitely worth it. There are no border controls between Finland and
Sweden, and the crossing is easy.
In the village of Kolari, 45 km away, there is a grocery store, a gas station restaurant, and a small burger-like restaurant. We’ll have lunch there unless the group gets hungry earlier. In
that case, we will have a quick freeze-dried meal on the go and then quickly stock up on snacks in the village. From Kolari, we’ll continue for 24 kilometers on an asphalt road before the
route turns toward the village of Äkäslompolo on the old main road along the Äkäs River. The Hannukainen shed is a nice spot for a break by the river before a section with small forest paths
and light single trails begins. In the Äkäslompolo resort, there is a wide variety of restaurants, a large supermarket, a sports store with some spare parts, and a mechanic.
Meals:
Day 4 is an easy one, just 50 km, allowing plenty of time in the morning for drivetrain maintenance, minor repairs, and stocking up on snacks for lunch. The route starts from Äkäslompolo on a
paved road leading to the Äkäs River. From there, a narrow gravel road continues north, running alongside the national park and passing the tiny, old wilderness hut Pahtavuoma, about 30 km
from the start. This historic little hut is worth a visit unless it’s pouring rain, cold, and windy.
The rest of the day is also easy to ride, first on a fast gravel road along the lakeshore and then on asphalt towards our accommodation. The Arctic Sauna World, featuring four different
saunas at Hotel Jeris, is strategically located at the end of the day’s ride.
Breakfast: At the selected lodge in Äkäslompolo
Lunch: In Äkäslompolo before departure.
Dinner: Restaurant at Hotel Jeris
Accommodation: Hotel Jeris & Sauna World
Stage: Village of Äkäslompolo to Hotel Jeris & Sauna World (49 km, 530 m elevation gain)
Almost directly from the hotel, a section of the old postal road leads over a fjäll on an easy singletrack and a small gravel road, offering stunning views of the highland landscape of
Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The grocery store in Raattama is located 25 km from the start of the day and is the last supply point before reaching the village of Hetta, 62 km
away.
The paved road from Raattama to Hetta is lightly trafficked and runs partly through the primeval forest of the national park, with occasional views of the mountains. The village of Hetta
offers a range of services, including a small bike repair shop.
Breakfast: Restaurant at Hotel Jeris
Lunch: Additional freeze-dried meal outdoors + personal snacks or other food as desired
Dinner: Restaurant or lodge restaurant in Hetta
Accommodation: Hetan Majatalo
Stage: Hotel Jeris & Sauna World to the village of Hetta (87 km, 570 m elevation gain)
Unfortunately, today we have to take the main transit road from Finland to Norway, a necessary inconvenience to complete this stage. We will encounter trucks and camper vans from tourists
along the way.
In the first hours of the day, the boreal forest gradually transforms into treeless Arctic tundra, and by the time we reach the Finnish-Norwegian border checkpoint, the views of the
ever-expanding hills are truly impressive. The only place to get food during the day is the café and restaurant at Galdotieva, 28 km from Hetta. In Kautokeino, all essential services are
available except for a bike repair shop.
Breakfast: Restaurant at the lodge in Hetta
Lunch: Additional freeze-dried meal outdoors + personal snacks or other food as desired. However, after 28 km, there is a café in Galdotieva that could serve as a lunch stop
if it’s not too early in the day.
Dinner: A meal prepared by the Sámi family who owns the accommodation, cooked in a traditional Lavvu (tipi).
Accommodation: Goldin
Stage: Hetta to Kautokeino (81 km, 440 m elevation gain)
While the previous two days were mostly on asphalt, the final two days take us onto the famous Finnmark Highland Crossing along the old postal road on gravel. The traffic-free 4x4 track, in
varying conditions, is occasionally very rough but otherwise an incredible route, winding from lake to lake and pond to pond through the vast Arctic tundra. Along the route, there are several
reindeer herding stations that are unused in summer but likely to be active in early summer and late September/early October.
Due to the occasionally rough road conditions, this will likely be the longest day of the entire tour. Today, having large tires up to 50mm will pay off, as the rough terrain is best tackled
with wider tires. The Fjellstue Suolovuopmi is one of the historic lodges originally built and operated by order of the Norwegian king to serve travelers along the postal route. Today, it
functions as a café, restaurant, and guesthouse offering several accommodation options.
Breakfast: At Goldin
Lunch: Additional freeze-dried meal outdoors + personal snacks or other food as desired.
Dinner: Suolovuopmi Fjellstue
Accommodation: Suolovuopmi Fjellstue
Stage: Kautokeino to Suolovuopmi Fjellstue (79 km, 740 m elevation gain)
The final section of the old postal road has been restored for tourism, allowing for much faster progress than the previous day. The landscape remains similar until reaching the edge of the
Finnmark Plateau, where a long, continuous descent towards the Arctic Ocean begins. There is an option to take a detour to a viewpoint overlooking the Alta Canyon, the largest canyon in
Northern Europe. The dry, windy, and cold highlands of Finnmark quickly transition into the lush and green coastal forests of the Alta River Valley as elevation decreases towards sea level.
The tour concludes at the waterfront promenade in the city center of Alta.
Breakfast: At Suolovuopmi Fjellstue
Lunch: Additional freeze-dried meal outdoors + personal snacks or other food as desired. Afternoon coffee at Gargia Fjellstue after 28 km, following the (optional) detour to
the Alta Canyon.
Dinner: Restaurant in Alta
Accommodation: Hotel in Alta
Note: Luggage will be transported to Alta in the evening.
Stage: Suolovuopmi Fjellstue to Alta City (55 km, 700 m elevation gain)
Transfers back to Rovaniemi by minivans. Departure early in the morning, depending on flight schedules.
An additional personal stay in Alta is possible.
+ What do I need to pack?
At least 2 spare inner tubes (for Tubeless, also a tube + repair kit), optionally a hip pack or other storage on the bike (bags) or on the jersey. A helmet. A spare derailleur hanger for
your bike, as they are not standardized and each bike has its own. Possibly chargers for technical devices (shifters, GPS, etc.). Weatherproof clothing for riding, as the weather can
change at any time. Otherwise, a few changes of clothes, underwear, functional clothing, hygiene products. Everything you would take on a multi-day trip. We will gladly send you a packing
list that you can use as a guide.
+ Anything else important?
Very important: Adequate hydration during the tours, so bring bottles (to attach to the bike or a hydration pack). You should also take care of food (bars) during the tours, as we use a
lot of energy daily that needs to be replenished.
+ What about food & drinks?
The tour is all-inclusive, meaning breakfast, lunch (dry sack), and dinner are included, as well as accommodation and all necessary transfers between start and finish. Snacks during rides
are not included! Drinks in restaurants are also excluded.
+ Traffic & Safe Bike
The route is planned so that we will be on gravel roads, some side roads, and occasionally on main roads. Generally, we will be riding mostly on paved paths, but it can get rough at
times. Bring lighting for your bikes, as we might arrive at dusk. Make sure to take a rear light, it's always important to be seen!
+ What clothes should I pack?
We will be in the Arctic, so the weather can be anything. Temperatures are likely to range between 5 and 15 degrees, but at the end of August, they could fluctuate between -5 and +25
degrees. Strong winds and rainy days are possible.
+ What else should I pack?
We will provide all participants with a packing list in advance. All clothing for the entire duration of the tour must be packed in bike bags. It is possible to bring an additional bag,
which can be left with Ylläs Experiences. This bag can be picked up between the 3rd and 4th stages.
+ I've booked the trip, what happens now?
We will contact you immediately. After your booking, you will receive a confirmation. If you pay via PayPal or credit card, the full amount is due immediately. If you choose "on invoice,"
you must pay a 25% deposit after receiving the booking confirmation. If you cancel 30 days before the trip, you will get the deposit back. Later cancellations will follow our cancellation
policy.
+ I've booked the trip, but I got injured and can't come!
It's really unfortunate that you can't join us. Depending on when you cancel, there may be cancellation fees. You can find them in our terms and conditions. Cancellations up to 30 days
before the trip are free of charge. We always recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance. Together with our partner MDT Travel, we offer several insurance packages.
For our gravel bike trips, we recommend a gravel bike with at least 45-50mm tire width. We recommend a tubeless setup. Grip is very important on this trip, so be sure to choose a tire mix
that provides good grip.
It’s advantageous if your gravel bike has eyelets to attach luggage. We recommend a handlebar bag, saddlebag (ass rocket), 2x top tube bags (top and bottom), and bottle holders.
We ride exclusively by ourselves on all gravel bike trips, meaning your bike and you should be able to handle multi-day tours.
This tour is physically demanding, as we will ride 8 stages without a rest day.
Before you book our trip, it’s important to be aware that the entire trip consists of 8 days of gravel riding under varying conditions. It can be warm, cold, wet, and physically
challenging. So, if you book the trip, you should be able to handle it physically.
If you are aware of this, then an unforgettable experience awaits you, one that you have never had before. The landscape changes daily as we get closer to the Arctic Sea. From forests we
ride through, to tundras, and eventually the coast, it’s a unique experience. Once the sun sets, we may have the chance to see the Northern Lights. Besides that, Lapland is vast and
remote, a perfect contrast to our busy world.
This program is not just about biking but also about enjoying the unique, contrasting landscape and escaping from everyday life for 10 days.
Book the right insurance for your trip now
Together with MDT Travel, we offer our guests comprehensive insurance coverage. For this trip, travel cancellation insurance is mandatory, as something unforeseen can always happen right before the trip and prevent you from starting. Travel health insurance is also highly recommended! Our participants can choose from various insurance packages that suit their needs.
